About Us

Established in 2004, Musuyanama is a non-profit women's organization that aims to establish healthy networks between its members and the greater Newark community. Deriving from the West African language, Diuola (Dy-u-la), Musuyanama, meaning "Beautiful Woman" is a plateau that aspires to unite women of all races, backgrounds, and professions and provide for them a platform to be heard. Its founders, Rafiah Muhammad and Vonetta Reeves, launched Musuyanama with the purpose of bringing women into full participation in society - Sharing success, advice, and offering services to other women around the community.

Teen Program

About YSM

YSM is a teen program that was established by Musuyanama's non-profit Organization in September 2009. The purpose of the program is to provide teen girls with positive mentors. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage and a time when many young people lack consistent support from older role models. Our driving belief is that the most powerful way to make a difference in a young person's life is through a relationship with a caring adult. This is not a therapy group; it is a place to talk, learn, experience and grow.

Mission statement

The mission of Young Sisters of Musuyanama is to provide positive role models and learning experiences to teens who lack resources. YSM will work hand-in-hand with the community to support teens who are economically, educationally, or emotionally disadvantaged

Testimonies

"YSM has taught me the importance of love and diversity" Disaree Arnold
"Being in YSM, I have gained sisters and long time friends." Jahnay Haskins
"Since YSM I have become a better person and have a positive line of communication with others." Elmartine Joseph

Musuyanama’s Women’s Reentry Program (MWRP)

About MWRP

MWRP is a service and advocacy organization committed to helping women with criminal justice histories realize new possibilities for themselves and their families. Our program services make it possible for women to obtain work, housing, and health care; to rebuild their families; and to participate fully in civic life. MWRP pursues a rigorous policy, advocacy, and research agenda to bring new perspectives to public debates on women and criminal justice.

MWRP Mission Statement

The MWRP is vital to our community as a whole. It will provide a greater self-image, self-respect, self-love and tools to succeed in day to day task. Women who have lost their way will receive guidance and a strong support system which will impact the community with one more mother home to raise her child, one more daughter home to nurse an ailing parent, one more asset to our community by learning how to be productive not destructive of herself and her surroundings. It will aid in the reforming of women inmates who are truly looking for change in how they have done things in the past.

MWRP

The Musuyanama’s Women’s Reentry Program is for incarcerated women located in the inner cities of New Jersey. We provide a range of services to promote the self-sufficiency needed for transition into adulthood. During this time they will develop the tools and resources to lead healthy and productive lives, and reduce their rates of re-arrest and re-incarceration.
